We have recently worked on the planning and promotion of an exciting new exhibition, alongside the curatorial team at Victoria Gallery & Museum (VG&M), University of Liverpool. It’s the world’s first major retrospective of the career of Liverpool-born artist – John Higgins.
The exhibition offers a unique insight into John’s career, from leaving school at 15 to join the army, through to finding global success as a major comic book artist and writer for Marvel, 2000AD and DC.
At the outset of the project, we created a strong brand look and feel that was influenced by the iconic creative style that John had developed for the likes of 2000AD, DC and Marvel, but also gave us a platform from which we could deliver integrated marketing activity to drive attendance at the exhibition.
Initially, this was delivered through a teaser campaign to build excitement and intrigue around the upcoming exhibition. We worked alongside VG&M in planning and creating this campaign burst, which focused predominantly on social media channels and engaged a global audience.
We then started the planning and preparation, with VG&M and John, of how the look and feel could be used in exhibition graphics and specifically the key themes that the exhibition would be focusing on. With this in hand, we were then able to create the interpretation panels and related graphics to tell John’s inspirational story throughout the exhibition, both inside and outside of VG&M. This saw us create materials ranging from floor graphics, window and door vinyl’s through to flags and light boxes. In addition, we worked with John as creative consultants on the accompanying exhibition catalogue.
In parallel a targeted marketing plan was developed and implemented in partnership with the University’s communications team. This cut across multiple channels including print, outdoor, social media and PR – through which the exhibition was featured on BBC Breakfast.
To date, the exhibition has been the most visited exhibition during VG&M’s 10 years.
We have since gone on to develop a new website to showcase the story of John Higgins; and have also supported the marketing of a special Comic Art Festival, which features writing and drawing workshops, guided tours, film screening and a Q&A session, which all will take place at the VG&M on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 October 2017.
